Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends in the University Community:

At the end of August, students and their families traveled from their homes in Virginia and 40 states around the nation, as well as from 65 countries, converging on Charlottesville for the opening weekend of the fall semester. Welcoming a new first-year class and our returning undergraduate and graduate students is always an occasion of great joy and optimism.

As we saw in dramatic fashion this past summer, we face some difficult challenges here, including the erosion of state and federal funding, the need to adequately support our outstanding faculty, and the integration of new technologies to enhance teaching and learning. All institutions of higher education are facing these challenges. I am confident that U.Va.’s distinctive qualities and our strength as a University community will position us to emerge as a leader in this era of change.

As we start this academic year, I am grateful for your support of the University.
